Since I was able to earn my own spending money, I’ve been taking pictures. I’d buy disposable cameras - those little cardboard boxes which housed the most basic equipment to snap 20 or so photos, all with the exact same settings - fill them up with images of my friends, family, pets, and outdoor scenery, then drop them off to be developed and wait several days before picking up my prints (in doubles, always.)
Photography classes and being the editor of the yearbook in high school were where I began learning science and technique. We worked in both a dark room and at a computer, learning digital editing. College provided me with a little more photography education, but most of what I know has come from the “10,000 hours” type of education - taking lots of pictures, and then taking notes on how to make them better. Inside and outside of photography, I love learning and figuring out how to improve.
Among some of my other pastimes and joys are: watching my kids become real and very cool people; beating my husband at the free NYT daily puzzles while we sip our morning coffee; the music of Gregory Alan Isakov; walking my dogs; embroidery; fretting about my protein and vegetable intake; reading and listening to books; and daydreaming about having my own little homestead someday. I like things to be simple and straightforward.
